SOCIAL AND EDUCATIONAL ACHIEVEMENT
“Children deserve an outstanding education;
Teachers deserve the training to provide that education.”
Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder have incredible potential! With quality education focusing on the skills needed for meaningful learning opportunities, children can experience a socially enriched school life and academic achievement. Tragically, such programs are difficult to find. Autism Partnership and Opportunity Schools have teamed to create a new program option for these children in a private school setting.
The concept of The Autism Partnership Academy for Social and Educational Achievement was developed to provide exemplary education for children with ASD so they can achieve social and educational excellence. Since the early 1990s, Autism Partnership has been a leader in the field of ASD, while Opportunity Schools has pioneered the efforts of private schools to educate students with learning and social challenges. This newly founded Academy will be staffed with highly-trained teachers that emphasize the skills needed for students to develop genuine learning and meaningful friendships.
The mutual aim of Autism Partnership and Opportunity Schools is to provide children an opportunity to flawlessly transition into general education and thrive in school. The Autism Partnership Academy for Social and Educational Achievement can make this happen, and profoundly affect the lives of children with ASD.
Opportunity Schools is thrilled to announce the opening of its Opportunity Program at Long Beach-based Lakewood Christian Schools, this upcoming 2018 school year.
Recognizing the need to offer more extensive services to a growing enrollment of students with learning challenges, Lakewood Christian Schools—under the leadership of Brenda Barton, K-8 principal—has hired Debbie Hutchens as their Opportunity teacher. With a Master’s degree in Special Education and ongoing Opportunity Schools’ specialized training, Hutchens will head up the program for K-8 students.
“We are finding that private schools like Lakewood continue to face a growing enrollment of students with learning challenges, but are not adequately equipped to meet their academic needs,” shared Louise Ukleja, founder and executive director of Opportunity Schools. “Our mission is rooted in keeping families intact in their school of choice—a mission that Lakewood Christian Schools shares for their families. We are excited about our partnership with the staff, parents and students at Lakewood.”
